Many
activities are available for Thunderbirds who have time for more.
Some activities require students who participate to be in good standing with work habits
and citizenship. |
Art
Guild
A small group of 10-12 students work on
a variety of challenging art projects throughout the school year. Students
investigate and think through innovative and creative projects. Projects
are chosen to enable divergent solutions and creative endeavors.
Art
Helpers
These students allow the art
program to run smoothly. I enlist the help of many students who sharpen
pencils, clean brushes, deliver artwork to classrooms, or assist me in
classroom needs. Some students help in the mornings, and some help in
the afternoon.
Chorus
Chorus - All interested 5th
grade students attend an audition, the 2nd Wednesday in September during
their P.E. time. They are requested to bring a paragraph stating a reason
or reasons for selecting chorus. The audition will consist of the students
singing, "The School Song" and/or "America." Our chorus
will participate in a Grandparents' Day Program, December Winter Musical,
and May Spring Musical, as well as other programs. They will learn to
play choir chimes and get a chance to try out for All-City Chorus. There
will be after school rehearsals for the December and May performances
as well as for All-City Chorus. An activity bus is available for transportation.
First
Lego League
Last year was the third year for our "First Lego League" team.
Miss Nutt learned about this exciting event while coaching a team
at the Great Computer Challenge. Students design a "robot" which they will program to help people with different levels of physical ability. They complete
a research project and work as a team. The team sponsor is Miss Nutt. Last year's team was the runner-up for the state tournament! |
Congratulations, "Thunderbots" on your Lego League Tournament 2nd place win in the region in Nov. 2005!!!

Great
Computer Challenge
Every
May since 1999 Indian Lakes has had teams compete in the Great Computer
Challenge sponsored by WHRO and CII (the Consortium for Interactive Instruction)
at ODU's Web Center. We take up to six teams made up of two to three students each.
Students are selected by teachers who are willing to coach them after
school for several weeks and participate in this Saturday event. We take
our computers with us and "show our stuff" in Graphics, Desktop
Publishing, Desktop Presentations, and Internet Scavenger Hunting. For
more details, see http://www.whro.org/home/education/cii/professdevelop/studentactivites/greatcompchallenge/.
Music
Helpers
Approximately 10 students are selected
by their classroom teachers if music is their first subject. These students
report to the music room on their assigned music day after checking in
with their teachers. They help the music teacher set up for the day. Approximately
10 students are selected by their classroom teachers if they are the music
teacher's last class for the day. These students remain after class to
close down for the day. The goal is to reinforce the citizenship skill
of "Responsibility."
SCA
Student Council Association consists of an elected board of officers and classroom representatives. They meet once a month and are sponsored by Mrs. T. Hughes and Mrs. B Ruzzi. Students run for election in the spring for the following year.
Strings
Fifth Grade students may elect to learn a string instrument. They meet two days a week with the strings teacher during their PE time. Students rent their own instruments. Two annual concerts give students a chance to show off what they've learned.
Student
Hosts
Student Hosts are selected by their classroom
teachers to help new students when they enroll at Indian Lakes. Their
job includes showing new students around the school and introducing them
to staff and classmates. The goal of the program is to help new students
to feel welcome at Indian Lakes. The
Student Hosts sponsor is Mrs. A. Blair.
Tomahawk
Times
The Tomahawk Times is the student newspaper. Published 3 or 4 times a year, it contains news about classroom activities and creative writing by students. Mrs. Alexander and Mrs. DeLeo are the sponsors.
